We were lucky to have Mr Stephen Fowler, head of design and technology, organise our visit. Staff and students (previously of Wairakei Primary School) allowed us to tour the very well-equipped and productive Design and Innovation Centre, looking at learning in action. We saw (and smelled) everything from cooking to welding to minibikes to binary numbers to computer design.
The highlight for most was watching Mr Forrest use the laser cutter to burn a logo into a thick piece of cardboard. It cut the design just perfectly and we were chuffed to bring back this memento.
Students wrote the following of their visit:
Thank you for letting us visit your school. It was amazing and epic. When I am older, I will go to your school. My favourite part was the laser cutter and the art! You and your school are very talented. Your students are very lucky to have teachers like you. - Mac
We loved the technology rooms. I liked the skateboard design and the laser cutter. I didn’t get to see my brother but my teacher did. Luckily I got to come and see what you have done - I can’t wait to go to college. - Maraea
I really enjoyed the trip to Nui. I saw my big brother Spencer in woodwork. He said he was making a storage cabinet for himself. It was disappointing because I didn't get to see my sister Isobel because she was doing drama. My favourite parts were the woodwork and DVC (Design and Visual Communication). Thank you so, so much for letting us come. It was really enjoyable. Now I know what I'm going to do when I go to Nui. - Nikea
A huge thank you to Stephen Fowler, Stephen Ross, the rest of the staff and students of Taupo-nui-a-Tia College for accommodating us all. We also thank the parents that took cars on this trip and accompanied our students as they toured the school.
