Art for Maths in Room 6

In Room 6 this week we have been learning about transformation- translation, reflection and rotation- of patterns.

We began by creating and continuing patterns. We used coloured paper to do this. First, we had to fold the background strip. Mrs Thompson got us to fold it in half, then half again. We remembered from our fractions work last term that this would make quarters. She asked us what would happen if we folded it again and some of us guessed it would be sixths, others of us said eighths.  We were excited to find eighths when it was unfolded. Next, we had to cut out paper shapes to make our design. We had to figure out how to get 8 identical shapes out of a strip of paper. Our fractions work came in handy with this task too.

We cut out our shapes and then created a design in one-eighth of our background strip with them. Our next task was to reflect our pattern over the centre line into the section below it. We used mirrors to check that our reflection was correct. We discovered that one way to do this was to put our pieces on top of the original design and then flip them over the centre line. This was tricky.

Once we had reflected our pattern and made a symmetrical design we then had to translate this same design into the remaining sections. Most of us managed this really well, but a few of us did a second reflection and ended up with our pattern being symmetrical both ways. This lead to more discussion about these geometrical concepts.

The next day Mrs Thompson wanted us to explore rotation with a pattern.  As we are learning about Thailand as part of our inquiry unit this term, we looked at examples of Thai art, and used these as inspiration for our rotation work. We had to design a quarter circle pattern. To do this we needed to use a compass to draw the circles. This was a new skill for most of us! Once we had mastered drawing the quarter circles, we embellished them with shapes and symbols that we could see in the Thai art.

On day 3 we chose our best design and ‘carved’ it into a square of craft foam using a pencil and compass.  We had to make the lines nice and thick so that the paint wouldn’t go into them. We also had to make sure that our circle was symmetrical so that it would line up with the other quarters when printed.  When it was ready, we rolled paint onto our craft foam and then flipped it onto a piece of paper. We had to think about where to put it on the paper to allow enough space for the remainder of the circle print. Then we had to carefully repeat the process three times to fill in the rest of the design. It was tricky having to rotate the foam one quarter turn each time so that the centre of the designs were together and the circles matched.  A few of us found out the hard way that it didn’t work if we didn’t rotate our foam a quarter turn!

We were super proud of our final product. The prints are beautiful and will be on display in our classroom this term.

For our final day of geometry week we went on a geometric pattern hunt around the school. When we found a pattern we took a photo on our ipad and shared it on seesaw.  The rule was that we had to caption it saying what kind of transformation it showed, reflection, rotation or translation.

There were a lot of mathematics skills involved in all of these tasks, not only geometry, but algebra, problem solving and fractions too. Now we have some awesome wall displays to start the term off. Room 6 loved maths this week!
