We learnt how to call for help, how to ring 111 and what to say to the person on the phone and how to put someone in the right position until help arrives. After morning tea we then had fun bandaging each other if we had a bad cut and were bleeding. We found out how to make a ‘donut’ bandage in case something was sticking out and we couldn’t use a normal bandage. We had lots of fun and even had time at the end to dress ourselves up in the bandages.
Next, we learnt how to help someone if they were choking. Did you know there are two types of choking - partial choking like when we have swallowed our food and its gone down the wrong way? The best thing to do is keep them coughing so the food comes either up or down. They can still talk and make noises. The next type of choking is called a complete choke. They can’t breathe or talk and might be making choking sounds. When that happens we have to talk to them to tell them we are going to help. Then you turn them on their side so they are a bit bent forward and use the palm or hard part of your hand to push between their shoulder blades. You then do 5 back slaps quite hard. If it is a little brother or sister you still do the same thing but don’t hit them so hard. If the food still hasn’t come out you stand them up and put your arms under their chest facing away from you and push your hands onto their chest bone which is called the sternum and do 5 big pushes.
We then played a cool game on the courts that helped us to remember what we have learnt today. I really liked today and learning how to help other people.
