Practise and Perseverance Pays Off

Room 10 has been very lucky to have the expertise of Riley’s mum, Anna, to choreograph and lead our Summer Concert performance. With ‘Our Lake’ as the Poihipi theme Room 10 chose a fishing theme. The children got to choose whether they’d perform as rainbow trout or as fishermen/fisherwomen. All the girls chose to be rainbow trout and the boys chose to be fishermen.

Early on, the class practised in their separate groups of rainbow trout and fishermen to become familiar with their own choreography. Girls had verbal cues to match their actions to help them remember. Cues included cup of tea, seaweed, fish, tippy toe, big wave and circle arms. The boys had input into their choreography and chose to include swinging arms, muscle arms and a dab as some of their moves. Robert came up with the idea of swinging arms.

The next step was to have both groups practising together. This was a learning curve for some who had to work on learning what it meant to be an audience while they watched others perform and waited for their turn to perform. They really had to work on showing their POWER values.

Teacher: What was challenging?

Getting into our circle - Avery

Choosing which place to hide from the fishermen - Indigo

It’s hard to remember where we are in the boat and the side we’re on - Jake

Performances improved as children went from relying heavily on Anna, by watching her perform moves and copying them, to be able to remember actions on their own with small cues from Anna. Anna also trained up two older students from Room 3 to be leaders on the floor for children to follow from the stage.

The children showed tremendous focus over many practices. At times they were very tired but showed perseverance to keep working hard so they could put on the best performance possible. They also managed very well with changes to their choreography that Anna made throughout.

On the dress rehearsal and performance days, the children were extremely focused. The boys, in particular, did a tremendous job of remaining silent backstage as they waited for their cues to come on stage. Performances improved each time. The class should be amazingly proud of their efforts. Well done Room 10.
