Te Mihi Learning Community Term 2, 2016

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students of the Te Mihi Community,

Welcome back to the second term in the Te Mihi Community of 2016. We have a great term ahead of us and we are looking forward to spending time with your child helping and supporting them in their learning. As a senior student they will have many opportunities to take on leadership roles and to become involved in the life of the school.

In Term 2 we are covering geometry and we are continuing to promote number knowledge. We will focus on developing strategies to solve multiplication and division problems.

The writing focus this term is the texts types Explanation (to tell or explain how things work or how they come to be) and Procedural (to tell how to make or do something).

This term we will be focusing on summarising a text and synthesising information.

We recommend that every child reads part of a chapter book from the library or a chosen book from home at least three nights of the week.

Sport/Physical Education

Our focus will be Winter Sports and large balls.

Virtual Learning Network Primary

The VLN Primary initiative aims to extend learning opportunities for our students by enabling online collaborations between schools.

Semester one is well underway with our Year 6 students participating in a variety of classes, including Te Reo, Spanish, French, Mandarin, Astronomy and Computer Science. Semester two will start for our Year 5 students in Term 3.

Inquiry Learning

Initially we will be finishing off our learning on Turangawaewae then in Week 6 our focus is on Systems. The Driving Question is “How do the parts connect?” and the key understanding is “All of the parts make the whole”. This will integrate the learning from our key curriculum areas and allow students to problem solve in a way that is meaningful for them.
