Week One at Wairakei Primary School

Kia ora everyone. This is my first week at Wairakei Primary and what a fabulous week it has been.

My intention is to add to this blog, sharing information about Wairakei school. This week I thought I would introduce myself to you.

At the end of the last term, I was lucky enough to be welcomed with a formal powhiri by Wairakei Primary. My Whakamaru School whanau representatives – students, teachers and parents – came with me for the powhiri and everyone concerned felt it was a very warm welcome to the school. This meant from day one I already felt part of the Wairakei Primary team. View the photos here.

I have been involved in education, in a variety of roles, for more than 30 years, both in New Zealand and overseas, as a classroom teacher, RTLB (Resource Teacher: Learning and Behaviour), Education Advisor and School Principal. I have found every role I have had worthwhile and fulfilling. My next goal was to work in a school with a larger staff and to be able to support teachers and students to grow in their learning. I have been lucky enough to secure the role as Deputy Principal here, at Wairakei Primary, which allows me to continue to do this.

Over the next few weeks, I will be focusing on building relationships with all the stakeholders of the school (staff, students, whanau, Board…), getting a feel for the culture of the school and coming up to speed with the systems, policies and practices.

Parents, whanau and friends of the school please feel free to pop into my office and introduce yourself, or when you see me around the school grounds.

I am looking forward to working with Paula and the staff to continue to develop this great school, making it the very best teaching and learning environment for all involved.
