# Marvellous measurement

### Room 13 have been learning about measurement and the different types of measurement there are such as; height, weight and time.

The students have had fun exploring standard and non-standard types of measurement. We have used measuring beads, tens frames, measuring tapes and rulers to measure different objects around the classroom.

During one of our math lessons, in pairs the student’s used a measuring tape to measure the length of their hand, the length of their arm span, the length of their foot or shoe and their height. The students also used measuring beads and ten frames to measure different objects around the classroom. The objects included a chair, a library book, a table, a box, their maths book, a pencil, a glue stick, a whiteboard pen and a mini whiteboard. The students did these activities in pairs. When the students were measuring the objects around the classroom with the ten’s frames, one person would hold the ten’s frame while the other person marked with one of their fingers where the ten frames ended, they took turns doing both of these roles.

We were also learning how to put things in height or weight order. For one of our measurement activities as a class, we first read the story of the gingerbread men. The students then each got a sheet of paper with 5 gingerbread men on it which were all a variety of sizes. We as a class discussed the different heights, height order going from largest to smallest and which gingerbread man was the tallest. The students then cut out the gingerbread men and ordered them in height order from largest to smallest and glued these into their books. In the next lesson, the students measured each gingerbread man using a ruler and using cm as the unit of measurement.

There’s not much difference between the tallest gingerbread man and the second tallest. Henry.
