Firstly, students learnt to recognise a number of shapes by their appearance. They created bead shapes and learnt the Māori names for each of them.
They then learnt to recognise that certain properties make one shape different from others, for example, the number of sides a triangle has compared to a square.
Finally, the students explored 2D and some 3D shapes. They classified 2D shapes according to how many sides they had and named these 2D shapes. Also the students have been constructing 2D and 3D shapes using toothpicks and marshmallows to understand the difference between the two shapes
The students have been very creative and assembled animal art using a number of different shapes. Room 10 students are also working on 3 dimensional art by reflecting the shape to create a pattern then layering it with decreasing size shapes so that it gives a three dimensional effect.
These activities have a lot of new mathematical language associated with geometric shapes.
Room 10 has learnt how to recognise and explore many shapes, The students are continuing to develop their understanding and talk about the form and function of these shapes in their own language.
Casey: I have enjoyed learning about 2D and 3D shapes and I learnt that shapes have a different number of sides.
Tiarni: I enjoyed constructing 3D shapes and learning the difference between 2D and 3D shapes.
Lilee: I have been learning the Māori names for different shapes and some Māori shape names describe how many sides the shape has, for example tapawha for a square or tapatoru for a triangle.
