Shape Up

Room 2 students used their imaginations and senses to learn all about 2D and 3D shapes. They started off by using shapes to create something from their imaginations. This is what some of the children came up with.

Our imaginations took us all over the world to learn about 2D and 3D shapes. We had to be shape detectives to see shapes in plain sight hiding their identities. We visited the Pentagon to learn about pentagons, we got trapped in octagonal prism prisons, and scaled the deadliest volcanoes to learn about cones.

Part of learning about shapes involved making them. Building shapes helped children learn how to describe them using vocabulary such as corners, surfaces and edges.

It was easier to find out how many sides 3D shapes had by making them and counting them -  Faith

I marked the sides on my paper shape to make it easier to count the sides - Dorian

I just counted them on a dice in class which is a cube - Harrison

The next challenge to become an even greater shape detective, was to be able to describe a shape by touch alone while wearing a blindfold. Children really had to use their shape building knowledge and prior learning to identify shapes by their features. This became a regular challenge for children as they worked with others to consolidate the knowledge of shape names and features.

It was fun and a little bit tricky remembering how many sides there were when I couldn’t see them -Tiarni

As shape detectives, Room 2 students are always trying to be better. We look forward to investigating shapes more thoroughly in the future. Who knows where our journey will take us next time.
