The Yoga Times

Every adventure requires the first step. Room 4 started practising yoga for the Summer Festival of Movement performance. Debi and her crew from LoveYogaNZ came in and taught us the foundations of yoga and what it is all about.

Avery said I know the different names of moves such as sun salute, warriors, candle stick, mudrasana, and  side stretch.

Debi has taught us how to control our breathing. It is important to get into rhythm with your mind and body and breathing helps this connection. By taking deep breaths this helped to reduce the stress and anxiety in the classroom to learn a new routine and be able to share it confidently in front of peers. It was really important that we focused on both inhaling and exhaling and took it slowly one movement at a time.

Not only were we learning yoga we also learnt the different dance terminology and what they meant to include these into our routine.

Unison means when you do the same movement  at the same time, next to each other. We were in unison during our whole dance completing the sun salutes

Mirroring means you face each other and do the same movement at the same time. We used mirroring in our performance as we had people on the left hand side and right hand side of the stage facing each other.

Canon means standing side by side then one person goes and then the other. We had a cannon in our performance when going up into candlestick. The front like went up and held for 9 hippopotamus, second line went up on 3 hippopotamus, and last line went up on 6 hippopotamus. This was really hard for us to do as we could not see the lines in front of us. We had to rely on timing and our own counting.

Yoga has helped us to focus on our breathing, especially in difficult situations. Learning to take deep breaths to cool down and control our emotions so we are calm and ready to discuss problems has become a lot more evident in Room 4. It has helped some students to regain focus when feeling frustrated at their work. By stopping taking a few breaths is sometimes all we need to regain focus and have another go at tackling the task at hand.

Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from mistakes, loyalty, and persistence.

My mission here at Wairakei Primary School is to assist children in developing their passion and skills to become lifelong learners. I believe it is vital that we allow the children to have an impact on the world one step at a time.

On a personal note, I am a fun and energetic person who loves all things sport. You will find me on the sideline of almost any sports game. I am involved in touch rugby, social football and hockey. I am also a little bit of a gym-junkie, who is always up for a challenge.
