Working with my buddy

Reading with our buddy class each week is always a fun and rewarding experience for both age groups. In Room Six, the Year 5 and 6 students are buddied up with the Year One and Two students from Room 13. Pairing up an older student with a junior student helps build the bond and friendships that will grow stronger throughout the year.

Buddy Reading is beneficial for both age groups, where our year 5 and 6 students are given the opportunity to be a leader and positive role model.  Their bond builds friendships with younger students and they love to teach them and talk with them during their time together. Before our buddy reading system started, Room 6 were educated in how to greet their buddy, share a book and read with excitement.  It is also encouraging for both age groups to be good listeners to each other during reading or engaging in conversation. Our younger readers are able to see and hear what being fluent looks like as they have a peer model demonstrating reading skills. The older students develop social and emotional skills like patience and empathy as they work with and read to their younger buddies.

Not only is our programme fun and engaging, the social and emotional relationships that are developed, creates a caring community within the school. It is also an opportunity for older students who find reading a challenge, to grow in confidence and strength when they talk about the pictures with their younger buddy, sparking their imagination and stimulating curiosity.
